More than a sudden menopause

Surgical menopause means a sudden loss of ovarian hormones, alongside recovery from surgery and the condition that led to it. There may be little time to prepare for changes that reach into every part of life, including both physically and mentally.

More than a list of symptoms

Sex, relationships, work, confidence and long-term health can all be affected. We need care that looks beyond hot flushes and recognises the full impact of life after surgery.

More than an afterthought

Menopause care should be part of the plan before surgery takes place. That means clear information, treatment options and ongoing support — without having to fight to be heard.

“I knew it wouldn’t be the same as normal menopause, but I didn’t expect it to be more than menopause. From the initial crash to now, the lack of support has been neverending. My needs continue to be inadequately addressed. My health is deteriorating. My mental wellbeing has crashed. This isn’t ‘just’ menopause. It affects our entire body and being and no-one is listening to that experience and what it is really like for women in surgical menopause. It’s a scandal.”

About World Surgical Menopause Day

World Surgical Menopause Day was founded in 2025 by Kate Dyson, founder of SURGE Menopause, and Lisa Creasey, founder of Surgical Menopause Support Group UK, after our own experiences brought us together around a shared frustration: women were entering surgical menopause without the information, preparation and ongoing care they needed.

Our routes to surgical menopause were different, but what happened afterwards was painfully familiar. We both experienced first-hand the impact of losing ovarian function — and how difficult it could be to find clear information, knowledgeable healthcare and support that recognised surgical menopause as more than simply an earlier version of natural menopause.

We created World Surgical Menopause Day because we knew our experiences weren’t isolated. What we didn’t expect was the scale of the response.

In its first year, the campaign reached around the world, bringing together women, clinicians, charities and organisations and prompting women everywhere to share their own experiences. Again and again, we heard stories of women who had not been properly prepared for surgical menopause, had struggled to access appropriate treatment or had been left to navigate its symptoms and long-term health implications with too little support.

Its unexpected global success showed just how widespread this failure in women’s healthcare is.

World Surgical Menopause Day exists to make that failure impossible to ignore — and to build a future where every woman entering surgical menopause understands what is happening to her body and receives the care she needs before, during and long after surgery.
