SURGE for
loop
Our mission is to bring visibility, understanding, and change to the experience of surgical menopause.
SURGE Menopause is a peer-led, advocacy organisation built from the lived experience of surgical menopause. We know firsthand the toll of long waitlists, poor information, and the lack of clinical understanding or empathy. Too many women are left to navigate the devastating impact of sudden hormone deprivation alone, without support or recognition of what this really is: female castration.
Who we’re for
Anyone facing ovary removal or living with surgical menopause (including cancer/genetics/endometriosis pathways)
Families and allies who want to understand and support
Clinicians, NHS leaders and policymakers who want to improve care
How we work
Patient-led, evidence-based: We’ll combine lived experience with robust research to set priorities that matter
Collaborative: We’ll convene clinicians, researchers, charities and policymakers to fix gaps together
Practical first: Templates, scripts and tools you can use today to support self-advocacy and empower women to take control of their care.
We’re calling for…
Recognition
Surgical menopause is distinct from natural menopause. Name it, track it, and design care around it.
HRT by Default
Where it’s safe, HRT should be offered and started promptly, with a clear plan at discharge.
Pre-op Counselling
Every woman gets informed choices before surgery: symptoms, fertility, sex, bone and heart health.
Built-in Follow-up
A 6–12 week review with a named contact, plus onward referral to menopause-trained support.
Open Data
Trust-level reporting on post-surgery HRT and follow-up so gaps are visible and fixable.
Clear NHS Standards
One national pathway for surgical menopause care, so the right support is offered every time.
